In a move aimed at promoting human rights and protecting trade union rights in Algeria, the Confederation of Trade Unions of Productive Forces (COSYFOP) issued an open letter to His Excellency Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, President of the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria. This letter, which coincides with International Human Rights Day, celebrated on December 10, calls on the Algerian government to respond to the concerns raised by the United Nations Special Rapporteurs in their letter dated September 12, 2024.
The letter highlights pressing issues related to freedom of assembly, the right to form unions, and the human rights of trade unionists and human rights defenders in Algeria. In its letter, the confederation emphasizes the need to provide a safe environment for trade union organizations and civil society, enabling these bodies to carry out their legitimate activities without fear of reprisal.
In this context, the Confederation expressed its gratitude to the UN Special Rapporteurs who highlighted in their report the case of Mr. Raouf Mellal, President of the Confederation, as an example of the challenges facing human rights defenders and trade unionists in Algeria. The Confederation considered this reminder an important step toward shedding light on the ongoing human rights violations in the country.
The Confederation calls on President Tebboune to officially respond to this letter in order to guarantee union rights and freedoms in Algeria and ensure the application of international law in this regard. The Confederation also calls on international organizations and relevant parties to support the struggle of human rights defenders and unionists in Algeria and to ensure the government's commitment to its international obligations.
In concluding its message, the Confederation of Productive Forces Trade Unions emphasizes the importance of this step as part of the ongoing dialogue between Algeria and the international community on issues of human rights and public freedoms.
