In a previous statement, the Confederation of Trade Unions of Productive Forces praised the presidential pardon measures and called on the president to engage in a comprehensive national dialogue:
The Confederation of Trade Unions of Productive Forces expressed its surprise at the rise of some individuals, who claim to represent the Algerian opposition, to the forefront of the French media scene, where they criticize the political and human rights situation in Algeria without having a history of struggle within the country. The Confederation affirmed that these individuals “They do not represent the true will of the Algerian people, nor do they express the aspirations of the honorable opposition that is struggling to build a strong democratic state. She also pointed out that the attacks of these opportunistic figuresIt does not serve the interests of the Algerian opposition, but rather harms it and distorts its image in the eyes of the national public opinion. She added thatThe repressive and exclusionary policies practiced by the authorities contribute to pushing some opposition voices abroad, where they are exploited by foreign parties to achieve agendas that do not serve Algeria's interests.“.
The statement was published on January 8, 2024. The Confederation of Trade Unions of Productive Forces (COSYFOP) also expressed its thanks and appreciation toPresident of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, for recently issuing a presidential pardon for 2,471 detainees. The Confederation described this step as "positive and reflective of the President's commitment to strengthening national stability and achieving reconciliation," affirming its full support for these measures, which it considers an important step toward strengthening national unity.
However, the Confederation expressed its deep concern over recent developments in Algerian-French relations, particularly after Algeria announced the foiling of a French intelligence plot. It emphasized that these tensions "further complicate the situation and require wise and cautious handling to protect Algeria's interests and sovereignty."
The Confederation also expressed its surprise at the dominance of some individuals claiming to represent the Algerian opposition in the French media, who criticize the political and human rights situation in Algeria without having a history of struggle within the country. The Confederation emphasized that these individuals "do not represent the true will of the Algerian people nor express the aspirations of the honorable opposition, which is struggling to build a strong democratic state."
The Confederation noted that the attacks by these opportunistic figures "do not serve the interests of the Algerian opposition, but rather harm it and distort its image in the eyes of the national public." It also held the political authorities partly responsible for the emergence of such phenomena, due to policies of repression and exclusion that push some opposition voices abroad, where they are exploited by foreign parties to advance agendas that do not serve Algeria's interests.
The Confederation called on the authorities to move beyond the "all-security" policy and open the doors to comprehensive dialogue with all honorable opposition voices that refuse to be used as tools in the hands of foreigners. It emphasized that "the dangers facing Algeria have become clear, and intransigence in positions and closing doors will only lead to further crisis and division."
The Confederation presented a set of recommendations to achieve national reconciliation, including:
- Release prisoners of conscience who were imprisoned simply for expressing their opinions.
- Opening the media space to constructive critical voices.
- Providing guarantees for exiled dissidents to return home and participate in state-building.
- Preparing for a comprehensive national dialogue with all opposition parties that reject subservience to foreign agendas.
The Confederation concluded its statement by stressing the need to unify ranks and stand as a united front in the face of the challenges facing Algeria, calling on everyone to overcome their differences and focus on the nation's greater interest.
