SNATEG Submits a Communication to the United Nations Concerning General Electric, the United States and Algeria

The National Autonomous Union of Electricity and Gas Workers (SNATEG), affiliated with the Trade Union Confederation of Productive Forces (COSYFOP), announces that it has submitted a communication to the Special Procedures of the United Nations Human Rights Council concerning General Electric Company, GE Vernova, the United States and Algeria.

The communication addresses the continuing restrictions on SNATEG’s trade union rights and Algeria’s failure to reconsider the decision to dissolve the union, despite repeated recommendations from the International Labour Organization (ILO). It also raises concerns about the implementation and follow-up of the mediation process facilitated by the U.S. National Contact Point in the case brought by SNATEG and IndustriALL against General Electric. The outcome of that process was published by the U.S. Department of State in its Final Statement of 25 May 2022.

SNATEG is asking the relevant UN mandates to examine the matter and seek clarification from the Algerian and U.S. authorities, as well as from General Electric and GE Vernova.

SNATEG will continue to pursue all available legal and institutional avenues, nationally and internationally, to defend its rights and the rights of the workers it represents.
